1.8.16 - .demo .ref 'not exists', can't save sttgs

After installing 1.8.16, errors received on load - .demo.db not exists, then when opening my collection.db in a different directory, gain 'can't open reference .reference.ref, My collection.db then opens, however changing Reference and Backup folder in the settings, I click OK, the program restarts, and does not store the new reference file, nor backup folder. I am able to edit and save my collection, but have no references and must start over by opening my collection each time. I'm on Windows 10.
